The History of Rolex Watches

In the year 1908 two London watchmakers Hans Wilsdorf and his brother in law Alfred Davis registered the trademark for Rolex Watches. Although the two European men began their watch making career in London, United Kingdom, they later decided to open an office in Switzerland.

Wilsdorf and Davis then registered the company’s name in 1915. The name is thought to be a name that they made up and decided upon because the name was small enough to display on the dial of a watch and was easy to pronounce in any language.

The Rolex name began appearing on the dial in 1926 and was popularized by an effective ad campaign that also increased the brand recognition. The company won many awards for their finely crafted timepieces.

An early award that particularly stands out was a Class A precision certificate, an award usually given only to marine chronometers was awarded to Rolex watches. The company won this prestigious award given by the Kew Observatory in 1914.

A few years later, in 1919, Wilsdorf decided to move the company to Geneva, Switzerland where it was established as the Rolex Watch Company. The company’s name was later changed to Montres-Rolex and then to Rolex-SA. The company moved to Switzerland from the United Kingdom because the taxes and export duties on the gold and silver used for the cases for the Rolex watches pushed production costs too high.

Rolex watches are known for their many innovations (which are often copied by Rolex Replica Watches) such as being the first wristwatch to display an automatically changing date on the front of the dial in 1945. The Oyster Perpetual Submariner made in 1953 had the first watchcase that was waterproof to 330 feet below. The company also developed the first timepiece to show two time zones at one time in 1954. Whatever the public wanted from a wristwatch, Rolex watches soon performed.

Wilsdorf established the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation in 1944 after his wife passed away. Wilsdorf left all of his shares of stock in Rolex Watches in the fund to make sure that part of the business's income would continue to be used for charitable purposes. The company behind Rolex watches is still owned by a private trust fund and the stock shares are not traded on the stock exchanges.
